Feeling you’d like to consider getting your teeth whitened? There are a few things to consider.
Before we talk about whitening (also known as tooth bleaching in the past), it’s important to understand why teeth discolour. Usual everyday things, like drinking tea, coffee and red wine, along with certain foods such as curry and dark berries can stain teeth. These, coupled with certain habits such as smoking and certain medications, can lead to stains which require attention via dental visits.
It’s from understanding the above we can tailor and work out if whitening is suitable for our patients. Teeth whitening isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment. Some patients might be perfect candidates for teeth whitening, whereas others may have other underlying issues that need to be resolved before considering teeth whitening.
We here at East Grinstead Dental Practice understand how whiter and brighter teeth can be a massive booster for patients, making them feel more confident and happier and helping their self-esteem. In the UK, as dentists are only able to prescribe teeth whitening safely, it’s important we together have a conversation as to whether it is the right and successful option for you.
Patients can expect long-lasting results, particularly with yearly top-ups and good hygiene maintenance.
With our professional care, sensitivity is minimised, and risks of gum damage are avoided as we tailor the treatment to your individual needs.
Our Boutique Home Whitening kits include mouth trays that are tailor-made to fit your teeth. The prescribed whitening gel is designed to safely transform your teeth to make them brighter and whiter from the comfort of your own home. Most importantly, we believe in providing patients with double the usual quantities of gel compared to normal courses of whitening. From our experience of using this method since 2011, patients get the very best and longest-lasting results.
We can also use this process to tailor the strength of the gels to our patients during their whitening course, allowing for a safe, effective and more comfortable outcome.
A cautionary note on over-the-counter options and whitening toothpaste. The market – shops and online – is crowded with products which claim to whiten your teeth.
Over-the-counter kits can only contain minimal bleaching agents by law, which means they may not be effective or cause an unpleasant banded whitening appearance to the teeth. However, they could also contain other abrasive ingredients that may damage your enamel. Unfortunately, some online kits may contain unlawfully higher levels of bleach/whitening gel, which can ooze out from the mouth tray (which won’t be custom-made to fit you) and damage your teeth and gums.
Whitening toothpaste may remove some stains from your teeth but can prove to be somewhat abrasive with long-term use, risking damage to your enamel. So, in conclusion, teeth whitening carried out professionally by your dentist, is your route to the most safe, personalised and successful outcome!
